I thought I’d share something I’ve been working on recently… squeezing every penny I can out of my site by analysing longtail keywords and optimising for them. It’s easy to get complacent once you’ve ranked your site for your target keywords and think your job is done when there is still plenty more traffic you can generate.
Using GWT I compiled a big list of keywords I would never have thought of that I had been featuring for in search results but hadn’t necessarily grabbed the number 1 spot. Then I went through my onsite and tried to find clever ways to integrate these exact phrases without over optimising. In some cases this alone was enough to hit the number one spot, if not then usually one exact match anchor and I was there.
I’ve been doing this for the last couple of months and the result – a 30% increase in traffic and big jump in revenue. Obviously it’s going to be niche dependent, but I strongly recommend doing this, it takes like 10 minutes to compile your list and throw it into whatever keyword tracking tool you use to pick out some targets.
Process:
1. Go to GWT >> Search Traffic >> Search Analytics
2. Click download & save the spreadsheet
3. Copy & paste your keywords into your keyword tracker
4. Analyse & optimise your site for keywords with little tweaks to content and adding links with exact match anchor text if required
Below is a sampling of the kind of search volumes each keyword had, not all massive independently, but collectively they really add up!
